The Museum collects and restores vintage CPR passenger train sets( "deluxe- hotels-on - wheels") instead of individual cars and locomotives.The museum 's facilities include the Royal alexandra Hall, which is is the original oak-paneled cafe from the former CPR "Royal Alexandra Hotel" of Winnipeg . Man. built in 1906. The Museum interprets the lifestyle of rail travel through the display of vaious train sets including , the 1929 "Trans-Canada Limited:" which was given National Historic Designation in June 2011 by the Federal Government
Other facilities include a museum store, Library/Archives, the Cranbrook History Gallery which displays the Cranbrook Centennial Quilt and the Cranbrook Heritage Tour Map (all free of charge). Located at the old museum site is the 65-foot high Water Tower (a 1946 rebuild of the original 1898 tower) and the retored 1901 Elko Station ( which was moved 43 miles to Cranbrook from Elko in 1987)
The museum is open year round , and offers scheduled guided tours of the cars and rooms of the museum.
